What is USDT (Tether)?
USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of roughly one US dollar. It is the most traded crypto asset in India because it gives dollar-denominated stability that can move on a blockchain in seconds.
Most crypto is volatile by design. USDT exists for the opposite reason: to be boring. It is the unit people use to hold value between trades, to move money quickly, and to hold something dollar-denominated without a foreign bank account.
How it stays near a dollar
Tether, the issuer, states that each token is backed by reserves — largely short-term US treasuries and cash equivalents — and publishes attestations of those reserves. The peg is maintained by that backing plus arbitrage: when USDT trades below a dollar, buyers step in expecting redemption at par.
Why India uses it so heavily
- Dollar exposure without a foreign account.
- Fast settlement — a TRC-20 transfer confirms in under a minute.
- Deep P2P liquidity — USDT-INR is the most liquid pair in the country.
- Stability between trades — you can step out of volatility without leaving crypto.

The risks worth knowing
- Issuer risk. The peg depends on Tether's reserves and its ability to honour redemptions.
- Network risk. Send on the wrong chain and funds are usually unrecoverable — networks explained.
- It is not a rupee. The INR value moves — why.
- Tax. Selling USDT is a taxable transfer in India — guide.

Get startedFrequently asked questions
Is USDT the same as a dollar?
No. It is a token designed to track the value of one US dollar, issued by a private company and backed by its reserves. It is not a dollar and not a bank deposit.
Is USDT safe to hold?
It is widely used and generally holds its peg, but it carries issuer risk. Most Indian traders hold it as a working balance rather than as long-term savings.
Why is USDT so popular in India?
It offers dollar-denominated stability, settles in seconds, and has the deepest P2P liquidity against the rupee.
