UPI money debited but not received: what actually happens next

A failed UPI transaction where your account was debited is required to be auto-reversed, and the RBI's turn-around-time framework prescribes compensation to the customer if the reversal is late. Raise the complaint in the payment app first, escalate to your bank, then to the UPI dispute redressal process, and to the RBI Ombudsman if the bank has not resolved it within 30 days.

The money left your account, the recipient says nothing arrived, and the app shows something unhelpful like 'pending'. This resolves itself far more often than people expect — but there is a defined process behind it, and knowing it is the difference between waiting anxiously and escalating correctly.

First, work out which failure this is

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do

The auto-reversal rule

Under the RBI's harmonised turn-around-time framework for failed transactions, a UPI debit that did not result in a credit must be reversed to the payer's account within a prescribed window. If the bank misses that window, it owes the customer compensation for each day of delay — automatically, without you having to ask for it.

That last point is worth knowing precisely because it is so rarely volunteered: the compensation is prescribed, not discretionary. Referring to the framework by name when you escalate changes the tone of the conversation considerably.

The escalation ladder

  1. 1Raise it in the payment app

Every UPI app has a dispute option on the transaction itself. Start here — it files the complaint into the UPI dispute system directly rather than into a general support queue. Note the reference number.

  2. 2Complain to your own bank

Your account was debited, so your bank is the accountable party even if the failure happened elsewhere. Use the official complaint channel so it gets a docket number, not a phone call that leaves no trace.

  3. 3Escalate to the bank's nodal officer

If nothing has moved after the auto-reversal window, escalate in writing, quoting the UTR, the docket number and the RBI turn-around-time framework.

  4. 4Go to the RBI Ombudsman

If your bank has not resolved the complaint within 30 days, or the response is unsatisfactory, you can approach the RBI's integrated ombudsman scheme. It is free, and it is done online.

The case where it is not a failure

If your statement shows a successful debit and the money reached the account you actually sent it to, this is not a failed-transaction problem — it is a dispute with the recipient. Banks cannot reverse a successful transfer to a correct recipient just because you now regret it.

This is why paying a stranger directly is so much riskier than it looks: a person-to-person UPI transfer has no refund path. If the recipient will not return it, your options are their goodwill or a police complaint. What P2P means in UPI covers why P2P and merchant payments differ here.

If you sent it to the wrong person entirely — a mistyped UPI ID or number — raise it with your bank immediately anyway. Banks can approach the receiving bank to seek the recipient's consent to return it, and speed materially improves the odds.

How this plays out in a P2P trade

During a crypto trade, a payment that is debited but not credited is exactly the situation an order timer and a dispute process exist for. The correct move is to keep the order open, upload the debit evidence in the order chat, and raise a dispute before the timer expires — not to cancel and retry, and never to arrange something privately with the counterparty.

As long as the trade stayed on-platform and the USDT is still locked, a dispute can be decided on the evidence. What to do when an order is disputed sets out what to file and when.

Every order has a timer, a chat log and a dispute route — so a stuck payment is a process, not a loss.

Frequently asked questions

How long does UPI take to refund a failed transaction?

A failed UPI debit is required to be auto-reversed within the window set by the RBI's harmonised turn-around-time framework. Many reversals happen within minutes to a day. If the deadline passes, the bank owes prescribed compensation for the delay.

What do I do if UPI money is debited but not received by the recipient?

Raise the dispute inside the payment app on that transaction, then complain to your own bank with the UTR. If it is unresolved after 30 days, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman. Do not retry the payment while the first is pending.

Can I get money back if I sent it to the wrong UPI ID?

Not automatically — a successful transfer to a valid account cannot be unilaterally reversed. Report it to your bank immediately so they can approach the receiving bank for the recipient's consent to return it. Acting fast matters.

Does the bank pay compensation for a delayed UPI reversal?

Yes. The RBI's turn-around-time framework prescribes per-day compensation where a failed transaction is not reversed within the specified window, and it is payable without the customer having to request it.
