The 9 P2P crypto scams that actually work in India

Nearly every P2P scam in India is one of nine patterns: fake payment proof, third-party payment, partial payment, payment reversal, off-platform trades, premium-rate bait, impersonated support, wrong-network transfers, and pressure to release early. All of them need you to act before verifying.

None of these are clever. They work because they arrive with urgency, and urgency is what stops people checking. Here is each pattern and the single check that defeats it.

1. The fake payment screenshot

You get a convincing UPI success screenshot, sometimes with your own name and the exact amount. It is an edited image, or a genuine screenshot of a transfer to a different account. Check: open your banking app. Not the SMS, not the notification — the account balance.

2. The third-party payment

The money arrives, but from a name that is not the buyer's. The explanation is always reasonable: a relative's account, a business account, a friend paying back a loan. This is the primary route by which fraud proceeds reach an innocent seller's account. Check: the sender name must match the counterparty. No exceptions, no explanations.

3. The partial payment

₹4,800 arrives against a ₹48,000 order, followed by 'sent, please release'. It relies on you glancing at the digits. Check: read the amount, not the shape of the number.

4. The reversal

Payment lands, you release, and the transfer is later reversed or disputed at the bank. This is why the payment rail matters — see UPI vs IMPS vs bank transfer. Check: treat 'credited' as final only once it has actually settled, and keep the order record either way.

5. The off-platform deal

'Cancel the order, I'll pay you directly, better rate.' Outside the order there is no escrow, no moderation and no record. Check: if the trade leaves the platform, it is no longer a trade — it is a gift.

6. The premium rate

Someone offers well above the market to buy your USDT fast. Speed and silence are what the premium buys. Check: compare against the live rate before you agree to anything.

Rates move with the market. The rate shown when you open an order is the rate that order settles at.

7. Impersonated support

A 'support agent' messages you on Telegram about your order, asks for your seed phrase, OTP, or asks you to release so they can 'process a refund'. Real support never needs your seed phrase and never asks you to release. Check: support conversations belong inside the platform.

8. The wrong network

You are told to send USDT on a network the receiving wallet does not support, and the funds appear lost. Sometimes it is malice, often incompetence. Check: confirm the network — TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20 — before you send. More on networks.

9. Manufactured urgency

'My flight is boarding.' 'The order is about to expire.' 'I'll leave bad feedback.' Every one of these exists to compress the gap between you receiving a claim and you verifying it. Check: the order timer is there to protect you too. Let it run.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common P2P scam in India?

Fake payment proof — an edited or unrelated UPI screenshot sent with pressure to release quickly. Checking your own banking app instead of the screenshot defeats it entirely.

Can I get my money back after a P2P scam?

If the trade stayed on-platform and the crypto was still in escrow, a dispute can recover it. If you released outside escrow or traded off-platform, recovery depends on a police complaint and is much harder.

Why do scammers want to trade off-platform?

Because escrow, dispute moderation and the order record all disappear the moment you leave. That is the entire point of the request.
