How to check if a UPI payment is real before you hand anything over

Only one thing proves a UPI payment: a credit visible in your own bank account, checked in your bank's app or by balance enquiry — not in the payment app, and never in a screenshot the payer sends you. Screenshots can be generated in seconds, SMS sender IDs can be spoofed, and a payment app's 'success' screen shows the payer's side of the transaction, not your account.

This is now the most common low-value fraud in India, and it works on shopkeepers, delivery riders, freelancers and crypto sellers alike. The mechanism is dull: the payer shows a convincing 'payment successful' screen, you release the goods, and no money ever arrives.

It works because the proof most people accept is the easiest thing in the chain to fake.

The one check that counts

If you cannot open the bank app, a balance enquiry by missed call or a mini-statement at an ATM does the same job. What matters is that the confirmation comes from your bank, over a channel you initiated, about your account.

The seven checks, in order of speed

  1. 1Check your bank balance, not the payment app

A UPI app shows you your own transactions. When someone else pays you, the authoritative record is the credit in your bank account. Refresh the bank app and look for the amount.

  2. 2Do not trust the SMS alone

Bank-style credit SMS can be sent from spoofed or lookalike sender IDs, and a message sitting in your inbox proves only that someone sent you a message. Treat SMS as a prompt to check the bank app, never as the confirmation itself.

  3. 3Match the exact amount, to the paisa

Fraudsters frequently send a much smaller real payment and show a screenshot of the full amount, betting that you will only glance at the notification. ₹50 arriving is not ₹5,000 arriving.

  4. 4Check the sender's name against who you are dealing with

A credit from a name you do not recognise is not your customer paying — it is somebody else's money passing through, and that is the pattern that gets accounts frozen. Refuse it and ask for a payment from their own account.

  5. 5Look at the UTR, and look at it properly

A genuine UPI transaction carries a 12-digit UTR or reference number. It should appear in your bank statement against the credit. A UTR that exists only in the payer's screenshot and nowhere in your statement is not a reference — it is a number.

  6. 6Be suspicious of 'it is showing pending at my end'

UPI settles in seconds. A payment that is genuinely stuck is rare, and it is the payer's problem to resolve with their own bank, not a reason for you to release anything. Wait for the credit or cancel.

  7. 7Never accept a screenshot as final, however good it looks

Screenshot generators reproduce every payment app's success screen, including the logo, the font, the tick animation frame and a plausible reference number. Visual inspection cannot beat them and you should stop trying.

Four signals that it is not going to arrive

  • Urgency. 'I am getting late, please release it, the money is showing sent.' Real payers wait, because the money genuinely left their account.
  • A screenshot offered before you asked for anything. The proof arriving unprompted means it was prepared in advance.
  • A request to move off-platform. 'Cancel the order and I will pay you directly for a better rate.' Outside an order there is no record, no counterparty on file and nothing to dispute.
  • A third-party name on the credit. Even when the money is real, money arriving from someone other than your counterparty is the single highest-risk thing you can accept — see why third-party payments are dangerous.

If you have already released the goods

  1. 1Call 1930 — the national cybercrime helpline. Speed matters enormously here: funds can sometimes be held at the receiving bank if the report reaches it before the money is withdrawn.
  2. 2File on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and keep the acknowledgement number.
  3. 3Report the number used to contact you through the Government's Chakshu facility on Sanchar Saathi.
  4. 4Preserve everything — the chat, the screenshot they sent, the phone number, the UPI ID. Do not delete the conversation because it is upsetting.
  5. 5Tell your own bank in writing, so there is a record on your account that you reported it.

Why platform trades avoid this entirely

The screenshot scam only works when the seller has to judge whether a payment is real. Remove that judgement and the scam has nothing to attack.

On FastXP2P a sell order holds the USDT under a lock from the moment the order opens. You release it only after you have seen the rupees in your own account, and if you never see them the order expires and the USDT comes back to you. There is no version of the flow where a convincing image costs you money. The related scam mechanics are in the fake payment screenshot scam.

Sell USDT where a screenshot cannot cost you anything — you release only after the credit lands.

Frequently asked questions

Can a UPI payment screenshot be fake?

Yes, trivially. Apps and templates exist that reproduce every major payment app's success screen with a chosen amount, name and reference number. A screenshot is not evidence of payment under any circumstances.

How do I confirm money has actually reached my account?

Check the balance in your own bank's app, or by balance enquiry or mini-statement. The credit must appear in your account statement with a matching amount and reference. Nothing in the payer's app or messages can establish this.

Is a credit SMS proof of payment?

No. Sender IDs can be spoofed and lookalike messages are easy to produce. Use the SMS as a prompt to check your bank app, never as the confirmation.

What should I do if I released goods against a fake screenshot?

Call 1930 immediately and file on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Reporting fast is what gives banks any chance of holding the funds. Preserve the chat, the screenshot and the phone number as evidence.
