What the P2P spread is and what it costs you

The spread is the difference between the buy rate and the sell rate. It is the real cost of a P2P trade — usually larger than any advertised fee — and it compensates merchants for holding inventory and taking settlement risk.

Every market where someone stands ready to trade with you has a spread. It is not a hidden fee; it is the price of immediacy.

Where it comes from

A merchant holds both INR and USDT so that you can trade instantly instead of waiting for a matching counterparty. Doing that costs them capital, exposes them to rate movement while they hold inventory, and carries settlement risk. The spread pays for that. On FastXP2P it typically runs 0.4%–0.9%.

Turning a percentage into rupees

A percentage is easy to dismiss. Multiply it by your actual trade size and it becomes a decision:

When a wider spread is worth paying

  • Speed. A trade that settles in two minutes at a slightly worse rate can beat one that settles in an hour at a better one — especially in a moving market.
  • Certainty. Escrow and dispute cover have value that does not show up in the rate.
  • Size. Very large orders often cannot fill at the best posted rate anyway.

The rate is visible before you commit, on every order.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal P2P spread?

On FastXP2P the merchant spread typically runs 0.4%–0.9%. Elsewhere it varies with liquidity and market conditions — always compare the INR total rather than the percentage.

Is the spread the same as a fee?

Economically it is a cost, but it is not charged as a line item. That is why 'zero fees' can still be expensive.
